Manipulators exploit it through retrospective narrative rewriting. Politicians claim after an event "we warned you," though their statements were ambiguous or nonexistent. Media cherry-pick old quotes, creating the illusion that an expert "predicted" a crisis while ignoring dozens of that same expert's failed forecasts. Financial gurus after a market crash publish "evidence" of their warnings, taking phrases out of context. Defense: demand dated, public, unambiguous predictions BEFORE the event. If a "prediction" appeared after — it's not a prediction, but exploitation of hindsight bias.
Structured decision-making protocols. (1) Pre-mortem analysis: before a decision, the team imagines the project failed and describes why — this captures risks BEFORE the outcome. (2) Decision journals: mandatory written documentation of predictions, confidence levels, and reasoning. (3) Role separation: one person evaluates the decision without knowing the outcome; another knowing the outcome; comparing assessments reveals hindsight bias. (4) Regular calibration sessions: the team compares past predictions with reality, tracking systematic errors. These methods reduce the effect by 40-60% in organizational contexts.
